Humble Beginnings, Extraordinary Achievement
John grew up in Mayfield, Newcastle, and his working-class background and values shaped the man he became – humble, approachable, respectful, and genuinely interested in people, earning the respect of all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
John’s working career included roles as an apprentice fitter and machinist, a marine engineer, then the manager of the shipbuilding facility. His professional achievements reflected the same determination, practical wisdom and leadership that would become hallmarks of his service to Scouting and the community.

A Lifetime of Service to Scouting John’s Scouting journey began at seven years of age with 1st Mayfield Scout Group, progressing to earn a Queen’s Scout Award in 1955. His early leadership roles included Rover Leader of 3rd Mayfield Rover Crew, then Assistant Area Commissioner for Rover Scouts. John travelled to the UK where he served as an Assistant Scout Leader and continued his training at Gilwell Park. On returning to Australia, John became Assistant Area Commissioner for Leader Training in the Newcastle and Hunter area, helping develop and support other future Leaders. In 1973, at just 34 years of age, John’s Scouting career changed after being summoned and informed by the then Chief Commissioner of Scouts NSW that John was to become Area Commissioner for Newcastle and Hunter. John loved telling the story of this appointment, remarking that he was told – not asked – to become Area Commissioner. |
This story told often by John captured his modest humour and the determination with which he approached every responsibility entrusted to him.
John’s outstanding contribution to Scouting and the wider community was recognised through various prestigious honours, including the Silver Kangaroo in 2002, and his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2009. In 2024, John was recognised with his 60-year Long Service Award, a remarkable milestone reflecting decades of commitment, dedication and Scouting service.
John’s contribution continued following his 2007 retirement and he remained an active Leader, giving his time, knowledge and experience to the Movement he loved.
John’s Branch-level leadership was equally distinguished – Vice President of Scouts NSW (2016-2019), then President of the Scouts NSW Branch Council (through until 2025). In these roles, John’s judgement, leadership and commitment were highly valued.
Building a Stronger Scouting Community
John’s leadership had a profound impact on Scouting in the Newcastle and Hunter area, leading remarkable growth in membership and participation. People wanted to be involved, to contribute and to be part of Team John Price. He brought people together, inspired commitment and built a strong sense of belonging.
John was also an accomplished Leader Trainer, committed to developing, supporting, mentoring and inspiring others.
When John became an alderman of Newcastle City Council in 1977, he was appointed Honorary Commissioner of the Newcastle and Hunter area, acknowledging his continuing commitment and contribution.
Service Beyond Scouting
John’s commitment to service extended well beyond Scouts.
He was elected as the Member for Waratah in the NSW Parliament (1984-1999), and subsequently represented Maitland (1999-2007). Throughout his parliamentary career, John brought his practical experience, community focus and belief in opportunity to public service.
He also contributed significantly to the University of Newcastle, serving on its Council and undertaking periods as Vice-Chancellor and, for a time, Acting Chancellor.
A Legacy of Leadership and Service
Across Scouting, politics, education and civic life, John demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to lead, to build relationships and to work towards outcomes that benefited others.
The life of John Price was defined by service, humility and an unwavering commitment to people. From his beginnings in Mayfield to the highest levels of public and community leadership, he never lost the qualities that made him so widely respected. His legacy lives on in the generations of Scouts and Leaders he influenced, the community he served, the institutions he helped shape, and the many people who were proud to work alongside him.

A great Scout. A true gentleman. A life devoted to service.
