Adventurous Activities Print E-mail

Adventurous Activities plays an integral role in the delivery of Scouting to our Youth and Adult Members in NSW. Here are some resources to assist Leaders with their planning and delivery of Adventurous Activities in their programs.

New Activity Policy and Rules

Over the past 12 months the State Activities Council (SAC) reviewed the policies and rules for the safe conduct of activities in NSW. We now have one Adventurous Activity Policy that is supported by a variety of skill specific Rules. These Rules will be reviewed on a regular basis by the SAC to ensure that Scouts Australia NSW continues to meet community expectations and best practice within the outdoor recreation environment.

The new Policy and Rules come into effect on Monday May 2, 2011. There will be a one month transition period between the old policies and new Adventurous Activity Policy.  I encourage you to familiarise yourself with the new requirements. Over the next few months, we will introduce additional guidelines to help improve Scouting for Youth Members.

The basic premise for the changes is to provide a link between the existing Youth Members award schemes (where appropriate) and the entry level into the freedom to participate in outdoor activities. Your Region Activity Team can assist you in gaining necessary skills, and I encourage you to contact your Region Commissioner Activities for support and advice.

If you believe that our review has missed a point of the obvious (I often call this a BFO - Blinding Flash of the Obvious) please feel free to contact your RC Activities for clarification. Any suggestions can be sent to me, in writing, c/o the NSW State Office - PO BOX 125 LIDCOMBE NSW 1825.   Our team will meet in June and this will provide an ideal opportunity to ensure that we continue to give the best outdoor experiences to our Members.

Mobile Climbing Walls

Scouts NSW has been fortunate enough to obtain 3 mobile climbing walls to assist in our provision of adventurous activities. To assist with easy collection and drop off, the walls will be stored at Cataract Scout Park and the Baden Powell Scout Centre at Pennant Hills.

The walls were obtained through generous donations by Dick Smith and Peter Sjouquist and are greatly appreciated.

A centralised booking system is in place to assist Groups, Districts and Regions. The cost of the wall is $150 per day (this does not include travel or set up days) which is considerably cheaper than other commercial providers.

All equipment is provided and you need an Abseil Level 3 present for supervision.
